What is a baptism record?
A baptism record (also called a baptismal certificate) is the official entry made in a parish’s sacramental register at the time of baptism — the date, the parish, the celebrant, and the names of the person baptized, their parents, and their godparents. It’s often needed for things like confirmation, marriage in the Catholic Church, or genealogical research.
Why does the diocese hold this, not the parish?
The original register usually stays with the parish where the baptism happened. But many parishes have closed, merged, or don’t handle outside record requests directly, so the diocese — which oversees every parish in its territory and often keeps its own archive or index — is typically the fastest and most reliable place to ask. We route your request to the diocese for that reason.
How long does it take to hear back?
It varies by diocese, but most respond within a few business days to a couple of weeks. Dioceses with a large archive or a smaller staff may take longer, especially for older or out-of-area records.
Is there a fee?
Sometimes. Many dioceses provide the first certified copy for free or a small fee (often $5–$20), while additional copies or expedited requests may cost more. Fees vary by diocese and are set by them, not by us — they’ll let you know directly if one applies.
Do I need to know the exact date of baptism?
No. An approximate date, or even just a rough year, is enough for the diocese to start searching. The more detail you can give — parish name, city, your date of birth — the easier it is for them to locate the record.
Can I request a record on someone else's behalf?
Yes — our form asks for your relationship to the person (parent, family member, etc.). The diocese may ask you for more information to verify the request before releasing a certified copy.
Why do you need my mailing address?
Many dioceses only issue certified copies by mail, not email, since a baptism record often needs an original seal or signature. We pass your address along so they can send it directly to you.
